Methodology

This is where OrgBase data comes from, how we check it, and what our labels mean. The aim is that you always know what you can cite.

Verified: what it means

A financial year marked Verified was compared with the organization’s published financial statement, most often an audited one. We record total revenue, total expenses and net result, then reconcile them to the statement.

When a later statement corrects a figure and says so, we use the corrected figure. When a statement is not audited (for example a Notice to Reader), the row says so.

Estimate: what it means

A row marked Estimate is a placeholder or modelled figure that does not come from a financial statement. It gives a rough order of magnitude and should not be cited as official data. Subscribers see verified years only.

The major expense models (air travel, hotels, ground transport, meals) rest on expert assumptions and public rate tables, such as the Canada Revenue Agency mileage rate. They are estimates, not reported spending.

Sport Canada funding

The "Sport Canada funding" figure is the Sport Canada or Government of Canada contribution revenue printed in the organization’s financial statement. Depending on how the organization reports it, it may cover more than one program (for example core, high-performance and athlete funding) and is not limited to the Sport Support Program.

Some statements print only a combined government total, and we say so. An amount is shown to subscribers only after it has been checked against the statement or federal disclosure data.

Sources

Every verified row names its source. Several organizations do not publish audited statements online; for those we do not show verified figures.

Governance, board and staff

Governance documents link straight to the organization’s own page or file. Board and staff names and titles come from the organization’s publications and carry a last-checked date. They can change between updates.

Updates and corrections

We add new years as statements are published; most organizations release them in the fall after their annual general meeting. If you spot an error, write to info@orgbase.ca with the source document, and we will correct confirmed errors promptly.

Limits

Organizations present their finances in different ways, so identical figures are not always comparable from one to the next. The data does not replace the original documents: check the source before any important decision. OrgBase is not affiliated with any sport organization or with Sport Canada.
